Schloss Fischorn , Bruck, Zell-am-See, Austria
SS Headquarters at Schloss Fischhorn is visible just to your right at the village of Bruck as you approach Zell. As you may expect it is no longer SS headquarters in Austria but is now the headquarters of a large organic farming enterprise. See the bibliography for more material on Schloss Fischorn. Schloss Fischorn was used as a base for the SS bloodstock program which was to breed cavalry horses.
In the final days of the Third Reich, looted valuables such as gems and gold jewellry, probably looted from Hungarian Jewry had been deposited at Schloss Fischorn. -Standartenführer Josef Spacil was in control of the valuables and with the Americans approaching from the north and west, the English from the south and the Soviets from the east, there was no point leaving them at Schloss Fischorn to be looted by soldiers. Spacil handed out valuables to any other SS officers who called, including Adolf Eichmann, Otto Skorzeny , Willhelm Höttl and Ernst Kaltenbrunner . Some of the loot was buried in the grounds of the Schloss, some of it was hidden in the field boundary walls between Taxenbach and Rauris, on the other side of the valley from Bruck. Even today, small caches of valuables turn up during renovation work in a number of buildings used by the SS during the final days.
