CAP FERRAT

- Cap Ferrat Wikipedia - Cap Ferrat

- Cap Ferrat is perhaps the most exclusive point on the French Riviera. In 1926 W.Somerset Maugham purchased a house here, the Villa Mauresque, where he lived until his death in 1965. Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth stayed at a villa on Cap Ferrat before they were married. Rita Hayworth said of Welles "His genius wore me out." The Rothschild's villa Wikipedia - is now a museum. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton stayed in a villa there during the summer of 1968. Motion picture director Elliot Kastner took a villa at Cap Ferrat every summer during the late 1960s. Clint Eastwood was one of the party staying there with him after Where Eagles Dare (1968) when filming ended 1968-MAY-23. Kastner owned a Mercedes-Benz W111 Cabriolet Wikipedia - Mercedes-Benz W111 which Clint Eastwood so admired that Kastner gave it to him to ship back to California Link - Goodman-Reed & Eastwood's Mercedes 250 Cabriolet. Mutli-millionaries purchase and redevelop houses here. Microsoft founder Paul Allen owns the Villa Maryland Wikipedia - , which is worth nearly half a billion dollars (2012).

Ian Fleming corresponded with W.Somerset Maugham:

Maugham, aged eighty-eight and nearing the end of his life, wrote a sad note to thank Fleming for his latest, You Only Live Twice.
   7th May, 1964
   My dear Ian,
Thank you for sending me your new book. I read it, as with all the others, with great delight and excitement. It was very sweet of you to think of me; I was touched and much pleased.
Forgive me for not having acknowledged it before now but I have been very seedy and distraught. I have just returned from Venice, but with the realisation that my travelling days are over – it is a great grief to me.
I hope we meet before too long. I think of you with great affection and should like to see you once more.

TO SOMERSET MAUGHAM, ESQ., C.H., Villa Mauresque, St. Jean, Cap Ferrat
   13th May, 1964
   My dear Willie,
A thousand thanks for your charming but rather triste letter of May 7th. Cease at once being “seedy and distraught”. Move about as much as you can, even if it’s only short distances, and don’t forget that today’s news wraps tomorrow’s fish!
I have been seedy but without being much distraught, pleurisy and shut up in Sister Agnes for two or three weeks.
I shall be about again in a fortnight or so and I am going to try and persuade Annie that we might fly down to Nice and invite ourselves to you for a week-end, if you will have us. I would see that Annie did not exhaust you with her chatter and, as you know, I am as quiet as a mouse. But we both long to see you, particularly as you missed your London visit last year.
If you think this would be a good idea please scribble Annie a note and command her to your presence. She is your slave and will do anything you tell her to.
Now please don’t treat yourself like a piece of Venetian glass, it is not your style at all and you have always had the courage and fortitude of ten.
   With all my affection,
Dictated by Mr. Fleming and signed in his absence

In March of 1954 Ian and Anne Fleming visited Somerset Maugham at the Villa Mauresque:

On their return from Jamaica, Ian and Ann visited the South of France where, at the Villa Mauresque, he persuaded Somerset Maugham to allow the Sunday Times to serialise a selection of his short stories. When published in June 1954, with gigantic posters and an invitation for readers to compare their ten favourite novels against Maugham’s own selection, it added another 50,000 to the paper’s already considerable circulation and prompted Kemsley to consider a separate entertainment section – which materialised eight years later as the ground-breaking Sunday Times Magazine.

1954: From The Life of Ian Fleming by John Pearson published by Jonathan Cape, 1967,

Fleming arrived at the Villa Mauresque just before lunch. His host came out of the house to greet him, and instead of going indoors they sat in the sunlight beneath the cypresses at the end of the terrace. Maugham was at his most courteous but detached, pretending to be amused by all the fuss. He insisted that he had spoken his last word about the book on the telephone and that he had invited Fleming only for the pleasure of hearing the latest London gossip and because it would give him a short holiday at Lord Kemsley’s expense. Fleming laughed but said that he had never been more serious about anything in his life.
They were a strange pair of negotiators – Maugham with his stammer, his hanging-judge mask, his judicial attitude to a career which had been one of the most profitable in literary history: and Fleming, with his drawl, his sudden laughter, his sardonic diffidence, on the brink of a success more spectacular than anything even Maugham himself had known.
‘I have never been published in a newspaper,’ said the old man, and smiled acidly. ‘When I began I would have given anything to earn a guinea or two from the Morning Post. But they always turned me down. Now I don’t care. I have been offered a pound a word to write for serialization in America. I have refused.’
‘We could buy you a Renoir,’ replied Fleming. ‘A small one.’
‘I don’t want a Renoir. Anyhow, it would be illegal.’
The old man seemed to lose interest in the conversation. There was a long silence. They went in to lunch. It was served in the famous dining-room downstairs, where Maugham, Fleming reflected naively, had entertained Churchill, Beaverbrook, Noël Coward, Aristotle Onassis and the Duke of Windsor. When he was back in London he described it all in an article which he intended for the Sunday Times, but which was never published. In it Fleming was wafted away into a haze of veneration and self-promotion, but he can be excused for that, for he got what he came for. When he flew back to London next day he carried with him a message of love for Anne, a box of avocados from the Villa Mauresque, and the reluctant permission of Somerset Maugham for the Sunday Times to publish instalments from his book on ten great novelists of the world as soon as it was finished. Fleming rang Lord Kemsley from London Airport to tell him the news.

1971-JUL Thursday 5th, Villefranche Have been back since Tuesday. [Monte] Carlo a nuisance as usual so nipped over here for a slice of quiet. Michael Caine on board from his rented yacht a veritable tub that bobs like a cork. 56 He has a nice girl with him called Suzy Kendall who is married and presumably separated from her husband who is a comedian called Dudley Moore. 57 Michael speaks in a shout which becomes a bit hard in a small room. He is very funny and very cockney most of his wit being a regular and repeated pattern of catch-phrases. Black as your hat, A turkish religion with a tip-up seat etc. All repeated at various times during the day. Spends his time going to discotheques and parties of which, down here, there are hundreds. Many good reports of XYZ from all kinds of sources so E might have a big one again. [...]

1964-JUN-13 - 13 Sunday Talked to Aaron today who was dourly opposed to Sybil's marriage.92 The chap's name is Zaroff. Greek American from Ohio. Is 24 looks 18 says Aaron. Penniless. Syb retains $200,000. Rest goes into trust for Children. Roddy furious.93 Helen Greenford refuses to go to Wedding.94 Ivor delighted! Phil not caring.95 I talked to Kate for a moment. She sounded awfully Yankee. 14 Monday Left for Antibes. Much farewelling [...] at the local (called the Paillotte.96 Lunched in Le Mouscadins at St Tropez.97 Stopped for a drink at Carlton in Cannes.98 Went for a walk. Met editor of Sunday Mirror.99 Got sloshed. 15 Tuesday Woke late (around 11.00) and lunched on hors d'oeuvres at Eden Roc which is of course the restaurant for the Hotel.100 We then went to Nice airport to pick up kids flying from Geneva with BEA.101 Later I took the kids swimming on the rock and gave Michael and Christopher two key-ring compasses which they adore. For early dinner we all went to Juan les Pins to eat pizza.102 We watched with fascination how many people were fascinated by the old Rolls-R. I don't recollect any car getting such attention particularly in France. Rather a savage game of Yahtsee which I lost.

Burton records that trans-Atlantic telephone conversation was 'an Olympic shouting match' and from the diaries it seems that most communications regarding productions were undertaken by telegram. The same went for Italy, except worse. Note also a visit to Juan-Les-Pins. Burton and Elizabeth Taylor used a Rolls-Royce for their travels on the Riviera.

Sir Roger Moore, Sir Sean Conney and Sir Michael Caine have all been friends for years but sadly no-one has ever written screenplay which involves these three capital ships of the motion picture industry. Sir Roger used to live in St Paul de Vence. He once dined at La Colombe d'Or with Sir David Niven, Michael Caine, Michael Winner, Liz Taylor and Richard Burton. There is a photograph of Roger Moore and Tony Curtis at La Colombe d'Or which looks like it was taken in 1971 when they were filming The Persuaders! (1971).

Sir Roger Moore and Sir Sean Connery know each other from way back because they used to meet at the Buxton Club in London in the late 1950s early 1960s which was a hang-out for actors, usually in search of work. Through the Buxton Club Sean Connery was friendly with Bob Simmons at this time, who would go on to double for Connery in all his Bond movies. It is Bob Simmons who appears as the Bond silhouette in the opening 'gunbarrel' credits.

Ernest Hemingway, Pablo Picasso, Jean Renoir. Yves Montand, Alan Delon, Romy Schneider, Sophia Loren, Carlo Ponti, Sir David Niven, Francois Trouffout, have all been regulars at the La Colombe d'Or. Picasso has left some art work in the visitors book.

Saturday 24th A brilliantly hot day with Kate anxious to swim so we thought we'd kill two birds with one stone and go to La Rserve where K could swim while we ate and drank.55 This we did going by the Riva speedboat. It was very pleasant K swimming in the sea and the pool. Orson Welles gargantuanly fat joined us for a minute or two.56 He said that every film he'd directed in his life had cost him money, that he'd never received any money from any of his films and that Chimes at Midnight had cost him $75,000 personally out of his own pocket.57 He left the table suddenly and dramatically with a sotto voce darling to E and a conspiratorial squeeze of my shoulder. I wondered to E how he could possibly make love. [...] We ran into Sam Spiegel and Harry Kurnitz and took them up on the hill for a drink and a cool-off.58

In her house she had a special armchair just for Poulenc. Prokofiev wrote his Fifth Piano Concerto in a summer house at St Tropez. From there its popularity grew.
