Alpine Europe in the 1960s - The Motion Picture Locations
Kümmerly & Frey road map Alpenländer Alpine Countries 1960s

In the above map, motion picture locations are marked by squares:

Purple: On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) ; Gold: Goldfinger (1964) ; Green: The Eiger Sanction (1975) ; Turquoise: The Italian Job (1969) ; Red: The Great Escape (1963) ; Blue: Where Eagles Dare (1968) ; Red Circle: Goldeneye (1995) ;

World War II locations are marked by a red diamond.

The thick red bar is the line of the backbone of the Alpine mountain range. It is in this chain that the Alps are at their highest. The red double-opposed-diamonds mark the location of the road passes across the Alps

+ GPS CO-ORDINATES: For some reason, GoogleEarth reads out GPS co-ordinates in Degrees-Minutes-Decimalseconds but only accepts input in decimal degrees. Furthermore there is no easy way of cut&paste the DMS readout onto a webpage. You have to make a note of what you see. This means that reading out the DMS or a location, then testing it by pasting it back into GoogleEarth is slow and laborious. This is why the DMS GPS co-ordinates do not appear on many locations. Handheld GPS had not been invented when I found most of these locations so I do not have readouts from a GPS unit. I could determine the DMS from 1:50,000 topographic maps but while this is accurate, it is slow and laborious. The result of all this is that the piece of information most valuable to those in fast touring cars is missing from these pages. I have been informed by persons who have tried to use some of my co-ordinates that they are in error. For this I apologize. When GoogleEarth displays its readout in decimal-degrees then I will go through the locations again and determine the latitude and longitude of each then apply them to each location. In the mean time, please use a 'visual approach' from the annotated maps on these pages. If you have exact GPS readouts from a GPS machine for any motion picture locations then feel free to send them to me and I will put them up on the pages.

+ PDF COPIES OF THE PAGES: If you wish to take these pages with you to refer to on a roadtrip perhaps the best way is to make the page into a .PDF file using Adobe .PDF writer or shareware equivalents such as NitroPDF or PrimoPDF. Some shareware equivalents will trip-out before they have written the full page to a .PDF, in which case try another one or obtain a copy of Adobe .PDF writer. These pages will make .PDFs of considerable size (several hundred MB in some cases) but you can take them with you on your laptop or on your hand held device. Further, a .PDF copy will allow you to keep a permanent record of the page. This website will only remain for one month after my last login to the website admin page. When I die, it will only be available for one month.

+ YOUR OWN MOTION PICTURE LOCATIONS: If you wish to track down and record your own motion picture locations then the quickest and easiest way to do this is to get a (free) account at and then you can upload your photographs and show where they are by linking them them to places in Google Maps.
