L.A. Street Racers Association - The L.A. Street Racers Association were a real organization dedicated to illegal street racing and had to be persuaded that their participation in the movie would not bring them into contact with the law. While street racing and cruising were possible in the Sixties, the later Seventies and early Eighties saw a decided clamp-down in many West Coast towns. Large boulevards like Sunset would be road-blocked by the Cops on a Saturday night so that you had to take a right, go left, left again and back onto Sunset further up. Many smaller towns actually re-laid the main street layout so that you had to take those detours. Petaluma, which appeared in the American Graffiti performed this re-modeling of its street layout around the start of the 1980s. I wish I had taken photographs when I was there then but I had no idea American Graffiti had been shot there. Ironically, we even had conversations about American Graffiti while we were cruising in Petaluma. The road layout re-modeling never bothered me, but it must have had some effect otherwise they would not have gone to that expense. Either way, California as we knew it in the Sixties, "the California Dream", died quietly sometimes in the Eighties. It was good while it lasted.

In the frames here you can see the colors worn by the LA Street Racers are very similar to the colors worn by Hells Angels on their motorcycle jackets. Note the man who holds the starting lights appears to be wearing sergeant's stripes, which would indicate they had a similar rank structure to the Hells Angels. The association was started by the legendary "Big Willie" Link - LA Times Obituary Big Willie Robinson Link - Quarter Mile Brothers - Big Willie Robinson Link - Jalopnik Obituary Big Willie Robinson Link - IowaHawk - Link - Blog Hemmings - Obituary of Big Willie Link - flickr - Photographs of LA County Street Races Assocation, a six foot six ex US Army Special Forces Vietnam Veteran. Sadly Big Willie died in 2012 who ran a very quick Dodge Charger Daytona with a Hemi built by the legendary Keith Black. Alas Keith Black was one of these small shops which typified the best makers in spheres such as engines, firearms, knives, gun-leather: Their production dies with them and Keith Black died sometime in the 1990s. Big Willie eventually secured the rental of an old section of the airport for the use of the Street Racers Association but like many post-war motorsport venues in LA, it succumbed to resident activism over noise, and the encroachment of developers. Time never stands still and it moves fastest in Southern California. The L.A. Street Racers association had some eighty thousand members, in thirty-eight states and nine different countries but little trace of it remains today. If you are a former member then please contact me, especially if you have photographs or your original colors or any other original photographs.

Big Willie and his wife ran a pair of Dodge Charger Daytona called the King and Queen respectively. Some years after she was sold the Queen was crashed and rolled at a strip in Arizona. The King succumbed to one too many acid dip baths and presumably broke up or ripped into two pieces. Acid dipping was a way of making a steel body and steel panels a lot lighter but weakens the material in proportion to the dipping.

There was a third Dodge Charger Daytona that was used for publicity purposes. Big Willie kept this one and it remained in his yard for decades. After his death, it was sold and restored. During restoration it was discovered that the car must have been raced. This is as close to Big Willie's car as we get. I do not have any information on what happened to the engines from the other two Chargers, which would have been removed and reused. Be nice to have a Keith Black Hemi in the shop under a glass case just for old times' sake, and just to say that you owned a Keith Black Hemi.

Sound Recording: A particular problem for that forgotten but essential breed, the sound recordist, is the recording of loud sounds such as gunfire, turbojets and unsilenced piston engines. Sound is a waveform and the microphone generates a signal which is an electronic waveform. The louder the sound, the bigger the wave. The problem with this is that as the sound becomes louder and the waveform larger, the maximum ability of the recording medium to represent that waveform is exceeded. This means that the waveform misses the crest of its wave - becomes clipped. Those who play electric guitars through amplifiers are all too familiar with this effect, where it produces an effect called 'distortion'.
