The Persuaders - Aston Martin DBS and Ferrari Dino

Tony Curtis Wikipedia - Tony Curtis and Roger Moore Wikipedia - Roger Moore star as Danny Wilde and Lord Brett Sinclair. The pair of them are wealthy socialites who have been engaged by a retired judge to investigate cases which were never solved during his career. Tony Curtis drives a Ferrari Dino 246GT Wikipedia - Ferrari Dino 246GT and Roger Moore drives an Aston Martin DBS Wikipedia - Aston Martin DBS. This is the second big part which the Aston Martin DBS has been cast in, the first being as James Bond's automobile in On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969). The sober Judge Fulton is well cast using Lawrence Naismith Wikipedia - Laurence Naismith.

The tone of the series is lifted by the frequent comic interludes as the characters of Curtis and Moore interact, which they do very well, as you would expect. The humor is quick and sophisticated. The serious plots are well constructed by any standard but are elevated to the entertaining by the addition of this sophisticated humor and the superb choice of casting in the shape of Curtis and Moore, whose differences in character introduce a dynamic tension necessary for the comedy.

The title music is by John Barry Wikipedia - John Barry, most famous for his Bond theme. The music is dark and serious and leaves one wondering if grave events are about to intrude on the more effervescent storylines.

Both comedy and action are spiced by the frequent appearances on the screen and soundtrack of the Ferrari Dino 246GT and the Aston Martin DBS Link - Facebook page for BS1 Aston Martin DBS (Chassis number DBS/5636/R, engine number 400/4665/S), both supplied by their respective factories. It appears that the Aston Martin DBS is in the hands of an English enthusiast Link - Classic and Sports Car Link - AMOC - Aston Martin DBS - The Persuaders! but Ferrari have been unable to trace the Dino until recently, where they found it in the hands of an Italian owner who has owned it for thirty years. Apparantly he does not have any interest in The Persuaders! nor in reuniting the two cars for a photographic session. I am sure he has his own reasons but car ownership in Italy is frequently complicated by aspects of taxation.

Demand for Aston Martin's new V8 was so great that the factory were unable to supply one for filming. Instead, they kitted out one of the six cylinder models to look like a V8 and lent them that for start of filming in April 1971.

The Persuaders - Aston Martin DBS and Ferrari Dino

The opening scene involves Lord Brett Sinclair (Moore) and Danny Wilde (Curtis) finding themselves both arriving at Nice airport and thus in a race to the hôtel. The chase is filmed very well, with the cars being pushed hard along the coast road, edited with footage of Moore and Curtis actually driving the cars as well as some back-projection shots for some of the in-car close-ups. Overall this car chase sequence is one of the most enjoyable, scenic, inspiring and satisfying car chases on film.

You can see from the frame above that the suspension of the DBS allows for plenty of squat which must give it a lot of traction off the line, but must make it wallow through the corners, especially in comparison to the less powerful but much nimbler Dino.

Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor and family at Nice Airport 1964-JUN-13. The event was recorded in his diary.

From The Richard Burton Diaries by Chris Williams:

1964-JUN-13 - 13 Sunday Talked to Aaron today who was dourly opposed to Sybil's marriage.92 The chap's name is Zaroff. Greek American from Ohio. Is 24 looks 18 says Aaron. Penniless. Syb retains $200,000. Rest goes into trust for Children. Roddy furious.93 Helen Greenford refuses to go to Wedding.94 Ivor delighted! Phil not caring.95 I talked to Kate for a moment. She sounded awfully Yankee. 14 Monday Left for Antibes. Much farewelling [...] at the local (called the Paillotte).96 Lunched in Le Mouscadins at St Tropez.97 Stopped for a drink at Carlton in Cannes.98 Went for a walk. Met editor of Sunday Mirror.99 Got sloshed. 15 Tuesday Woke late (around 11.00) and lunched on hors d'oeuvres at Eden Roc which is of course the restaurant for the Hotel.100 We then went to Nice airport to pick up kids flying from Geneva with BEA.101 Later I took the kids swimming on the rock and gave Michael and Christopher two key-ring compasses which they adore. For early dinner we all went to Juan les Pins to eat pizza.102 We watched with fascination how many people were fascinated by the old Rolls-R. I don't recollect any car getting such attention particularly in France. Rather a savage game of Yahtsee which I lost.

Burton records that trans-Atlantic telephone conversation was 'an Olympic shouting match' and from the diaries it seems that most communications regarding productions were undertaken by telegram. The same went for Italy, except worse. Note also a visit to Juan-Les-Pins. For their travels on the Riviera, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor used a 1960 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II Link - Rolls Royce Silver Cloud II 1960 ex Elizabeth Taylor in the color Emerald Green, which Elizabeth had chosen to match her eyes. Two consecutive scenes close to the end of the chase In the 00:08:22 the Aston Martin swerves in front of the Dino. In 00:08:24 the cars split and the Dino climbs away. The house in the background seems familiar. But the backgrounds do not match.

The same scenes with 00:08:24 scene mirrored. The Aston Martin is right hand drive and the wipers are stored over the drivers side. The Dino is left hand drive and the highest of the wipers is hinged on the drivers side. The frame at 00:08:22 would appear to be correct. I have reversed the image at 00:08:24. The white convertible is now driving on the wrong side of the road, which it would need to do in order that the Aston pass on one side and the Dino pass on the other. Apparently, according the to the car's logbook, Aston Martin works mechanic Carl Seager was the lucky man to drive the DBS from the factory to the locations in Monaco which must have been the first to be shot.

Note the phased construction of the four-lane and six-lane divided highways. During the summer the motorcycle or cigarette boat is still the fastest method of perambulation along the Riviera because of the large queues of automobiles which build up. This map by Kümmerly & Frey of Bern, 1972, the data being compiled in 1971. Even in the Sixties summertime traffic along the riviera was thick. Sean Connery bought himself a motorbike in order to be able to overtake the lines of automobiles.

Presently, caution needs to be exercised at French customs posts on the France-Italy border at this point. In Italy, all manner of counterfeit goods are readily available, from Hermes handbags and scarves to forged Swiss Autobahn tax sticker Wikipedia - Swiss Autobahn Tax Sticker Vignette. French customs men search automobiles returning from Italy to confiscate counterfeit goods and protect expensive French brands such as Hermès Wikipedia - Hermes and Chanel Wikipedia - Chanel. Roger Moore and Aston Martin DBS
In this photograph you can see the real license plate of the Aston Martin DBS: PPP 6H. The appearance of this plate in one of the episodes is cited as a continuity error but in fact it was due to union rules. Most location shooting was too expensive because union rules required over-manning. In order to change the plate from the road legal plate PPP 6H union rules required them to have a fitter present to use the screwdriver. Cast and crew were not allowed to use a screwdriver. This made it took expensive to shoot on location. This is why so many of the episodes of The Saint use only doubles and longshots for location work.

In the first episode of The Persuaders! Lord Brett Sinclair (Roger Moore) and Daniel Wilde (the late Tony Curtis) have not yet met each other and simultaneously arrive in the bar at the Hôtel de Paris. Tony Curtis overhears Roger Moore ordering a cocktail, a Creole Scream. A violent argument breaks out between Curtis and Moore over whether the Creole Scream should contain one olive, as asserted by Moore, or two olives, as asserted by Curtis. The argument develops into a fight and the hôtel bar is wrecked. Curtis and Moore are arrested and it is only the interjection of Judge Fulton which saves them from ninety days in jail.

So. Mix a Creole Scream Link - Creole Scream and raise it in salute to the Life and Times of Tony Curtis. Requiesce in Pace.

4 cl white rum
2 cl dry vermouth
1 dash Angostura® bitters

1 green olive

Mix the rum, grenadine, vermouth and angostura. Shake with ice. Add the olive.

In honor of the late Tony Curtis, you should add two olives, not one.

This location was a villa in the grounds of the Château Sainte-Anne. This villa and the château have been redeveloped into apartments. Destruction of movie locations which were fine country houses strikes a particular horror, and this particular piece of destruction is not the worst of them. I found this location after many days work with binoculars from a boat together with comparison of photographs and satellite images. The existing clues as to where it might be were vague.

The Hôtel Le Provençal was built by American millionaire Frank J. Gould Wikipedia - Frank. J. Gould in 1925 on the neck of land between Antibes and Juan-les-Pins. It became a destination for the rich and famous such as Marilyn Monroe and Coco Chanel, Frank Sinatra, Edith Piaf, Charlie Chaplin, Winston Churchill, Ernest Hemingway, Rudolf Valentino, Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder and Joan Collins. Oddly, Martin Gilbert's giant biography of Winston Churchill does not mention his stay at the Hôtel Le Provençal.

The Saint in Europe

Leslie Charteris used the hôtel as a setting for The Saint in Europe (1954) Wikipedia - The Saint in Europe as well as some locations in Juan-les-Pins:

"I can't stay here with my dress soaking," she said abruptly. "Take me home."
Simon walked back with her to the Provencal. The sky was a blaze of star-dust, and a whisper of music came from the Casino terrace. Down by the water there were tiny ripples hissing and chattering on the firm sand, and a light breeze murmured in the fronds of the tall palms. Simon had a fleeting remembrance of the slim exquisite softness of Myra Campion; and, being very human, he sighed inaudibly. But business was business. A few yards from the hotel entrance Mrs Nussberg stopped. Her ropes of diamonds flashed in the light of the rows of bulbs flaming the marquee over the doors.

"Thank you for helping me," she said with a harsh effort. Simon's teeth flashed. He knew that she was taking stock of his tanned keen-lined face, the set of his wide shoulders and the length of lean muscular limbs. He knew that he was interesting to look at-conquering a natural bashfulness that he always kept well under control, he admitted the fact frankly.
"Not at all," he said. She opened her bag and held something out to him. He took it and unfolded it-it was a ten-thousand-franc note. He folded it again carefully, and handed it back with a smile.
"I'm afraid you're mistaken.," he said pleasantly. "You don't owe me anything. Good night."

On the front of the Casino there were banners and posters proclaiming the regular weekly gala.
"Are you going?" asked Simon casually.
The bright defensive eyes switched to nun sidelong.
   "Are you?"
"I hadn't thought about it." They walked a few steps; and then she said, sharply: "Would you come with me?"
Simon did not hesitate for an instant.
"I'd love to," he said easily; and she said nothing more until he left her at the Provencal. Before climbing into white shirt and tuxedo, the Saint packed a bag. He was travelling very light; but he still preferred not to leave his preparations for a getaway to the last minute. And he had decided that the getaway should take place that night. He did not want to delay it any longer. He was a little tired of Juan-les-Pins; and, even in that brief time, more than a little tired of the part he had to play.

It was late enough for him to have the road to himself, and no inquisitive eye observed the course he steered for the fire escape of the Provencal. With the calm dexterity of a seasoned Londoner boarding a passing bus, he edged the crook of his stick over the lowest platform and swung himself nimbly up. Then he flitted up the iron zigzag like a ghost on rubber-soled shoes. The lights were on behind the curtains of a room on the second floor, and a passionate declaration of eternal love wafted out into the balmy night as he went by. The Saint grinned faintly to himself and ascended to the third floor. The nearest window there was dark. He slid over the sill with no more noise than a ray of moonlight, and crossed as silently to the door. In another moment he was outside, the latch jammed back with a wedge of cardboard so that he could make his retreat by the same route, and the corridor stretching out before him like a broad highway to his Eldorado.

Between the wars Juan-les-Pins was just sandy beaches and Les Pins - rock pines Wikipedia - Stone Pines - but by the mid Seventies had been developed into a waterfront of hôtels, which are visible in the background in some of the footage of Sinclair and Wilde waterskiing.

Juan-les-Pins Poster: Waterskiing

In 1973 there was a dispute between the owner of the hôtel and the staff and in a masterstroke of labor relations the owner shut the hôtel. The building having been abandoned, it slowly became a derelict hulk, empty and looted, and a landmark on that section of the Riviera. Abandoned or ruined hôtels have an oddly romantic aire like a sunken cathedral. There was one above St Moritz for decades which you could ski down to on the track back to the village.

In 2008 a project was started to convert the building into luxury apartments Hôtel Le Provençal to be restored Link - Hôtel Le Provençal at youtube

The Hôtel Belles Rives was the first place on the Riviera to offer water skiing facilities and lessons, which is why The Persuaders! came to the location to use their boats and equipment. The water-ski chase in That Riviera Touch (1966) was filmed in the same location in the bay, and begins just around the headland to the east of the Hôtel du Cap Eden Roc. You can see the western end of the Hôtel Le Provençal with its flagpoles in the frames where Sinclair and Wilde are waiting to launch. There is a third boat visible at the dock which Sinclair and Wilde launch from, this time with a mahogany colored hull. This is the camera boat.

Saturday 24th A brilliantly hot day with Kate anxious to swim so we thought we'd kill two birds with one stone and go to La Rserve where K could swim while we ate and drank.55 This we did going by the Riva speedboat. It was very pleasant K swimming in the sea and the pool. Orson Welles gargantuanly fat joined us for a minute or two.56 He said that every film he'd directed in his life had cost him money, that he'd never received any money from any of his films and that Chimes at Midnight had cost him $75,000 personally out of his own pocket.57 He left the table suddenly and dramatically with a sotto voce darling to E and a conspiratorial squeeze of my shoulder. I wondered to E how he could possibly make love. [...] We ran into Sam Spiegel and Harry Kurnitz and took them up on the hill for a drink and a cool-off.58

Fleet Street, City of London
The Daily Express Building Wikipedia - , Fleet Street Wikipedia - , City of London. Fleet Street contains the offices of all the major newspapers in England and is thus regarded as the center of the print media world to the point where Fleet Street is a synonym for the press as a body. Over the centuries a large number of bars became located in Fleet Street in order to water the large number of journalists and printers. The Daily Express building was completed in 1932 and designed by Sir Owen Williams. He was originally an aircraft engineer which may account for the innovative styling of the building. The building descends two stories into the ground to allow the large printing presses to stand in uninterrupted space. The glass walls allowed the presses to be viewed as they worked during the night. Newspapers close their issue for the next day at around 22:00HRS the previous day which meant that the building was lit and working during darkness. Robert Atkinson designed the ornate Art Deco entrance lobby, which is an event in itself. Evelyn Waugh describes the foyer in his novel Scoop

Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor on the yacht Beatriz of Bolivia moored at Tower Bridge 1968

From The Richard Burton Diaries by Chris Williams:

Richard ceased making entries in his 1967 diary in early November, and did not start his 1968 diary until late July. During this period he played the part of Mephisto in Candy, filmed in Rome at the end of 1967. He then travelled to Austria and back to the United Kingdom, working on the adventure movie Where Eagles Dare. During studio shooting in London Burton and Taylor stayed on a yacht, the Beatriz of Bolivia, moored at Tower Pier, which they were renting while the Kalizma Link - MV Kalizma was being refitted.

Locations: Pinewood Studios, Black Park Wikipedia - Black Park, Millbank Tower Wikipedia - Millbank Tower, the Middle Temple Wikipedia - Middle Temple, Trafalgar Square Wikipedia - .

The plot, sophisticated as ever, initially leads you to believe that it is the classic but now too often repeated plot device of Prisoner of Zenda Wikipedia - Prisoner of Zenda, where the protagonist Wikipedia - Protagonist arrives in a land and finds himself to be the exact likeness of an important person such as the king or president (also Moon over Parador Wikipedia - Moon over Parador, Royal Flash (1975) Wikipedia - Royal Flash (1975) and many others). However, just as you are congratulating yourself on your sophistication and foresight the writers twist the plot ninety degrees in a masterful piece of screen-writing.

The plot concerns an attempt to assassinate a shipping tycoon, who is played by the great Bernard Lee, who had a long and magnificent stint as »M« in the Bond movies. Sir Roger Moore would go on to play Bond and Bernard Lee would continue to play »M« for all of Sir Roger's Bond movies. But for viewers in this new century whose minds carry the powerful impression of the Roger Moore Bond movies with them, there is a horrifying and hallucinogenic mixture of images and forces in this episode of The Persuaders!.

Tony Curtis really does do his own stunts and he really does them well. In this episode he achieves a flying drop-kick. Curtis's stunts are not only good by the standards of TV action series but are good by the standards of any stunts. They have the virtue in that they do not look like stunts but look like action.

It is important to remember that in TV action series, the time limits mean that lengthy increases in dramatic tension are not possible. Further more, even multiple angles within a shot may be limited because of the limited number of shots which the editor may incorporate.

From the The Richard Burton Diaries, for 1967-JUN-24
