After the Fox (1966)
A well-drawn caper movie, with star-studded cast led by the immensely versatile Peter Sellers, who was perfect for the rôle. Some nice locations including Cinecittà itself as a location. The build up to the dénoûment is long and exciting but ends without doing justice to this build-up. It feels like there should be another forty minutes of movie in order to do justice to such clever build-up.
Vittorio di Seca, directing the movie, makes an appearance as himself. Britt Ekland plays the Fox's younger sister. Victor Mature had come out of retirement to play the character Tony Powell, who is essentially Victor Mature. Akim Tamiroff plays the Egyptian master-criminal and his moll is played by Italian beauty Maria Grazia Buccella , who was Miss Italy in 1959 and considered for the part of Domino in Thunderball Maria Buccella makes for a visually impressive opening scene. Italy's women's magazines feature toplessness and nudity, much like its beaches, and it seems to be mandatory that Italy's actresses pose nude for Playboy magazine.
Cinecittà in 1966: The Pyramids
The real Pyramids in 1966. The gold wagon drives through Egyptian scenery.
Egypt 1943, a DC3 flies over the Pyramids
Cairo in 1966. Much of old Cairo has been destroyed and redeveloped. I doubt half of these buildings are still there.
Scene: In the opening scene, Akim Tamaroff stages a heist of the wagon delivering the gold using Maria Grazia Buccella as a decoy. The drivers never stood a chance.
Akim Tameroff: Back projection at Cinecittà.
The trap is laid.
So this is what they mean by a mirage.
The drivers of the gold wagon blow a gasket.
Costume have chosen a fishnet veil which is not easily visible in this DVD transfer but would have been on the silver screen. Personally I would have chosen a see-through veil for his mission.
This is the scene where Maria mimes to Akim Tamaroff's voice which inspired the same scene in Goldmember (2002) .
Maria Grazia Buccella
Scene: Peter Sellers, aka The Fox, imagines that his sister is prostituting herself on the Via Veneto
Location: Via Veneto. Roma. Ahhhhhh.....
Britt Ekland in a wig, right of frame. Peter Sellers as the Fox, in one of his many superb disguises.
Scene: Tony Powell in his hotel suite
Location: Studio at Cinecittà
In the background we see a full-length wardrobe trunk. You can see that it is long enough to contain Tony Powell's trench-coats. Even taller wardrobe trunks were made to contain items such as Marlene Dietrich's gowns.
Scene: The Fox retreives his sister from another foray into acting
Location: Via Veneto
Peter Sellers as the Fox, desguised as Carbinieri at 129 Via Veneto
Scene: In Tony Powell's hotel room in Sevaglio
Location: Studio at Cinecittà
Britt Ekland with Tony Powell's hair coloring all over her face.
Vittorio de Sica
Scene: The gold comes ashore at Sevalio:
Location: St Angelo
The Fox has stolen Vittorio de Sica's equipment, including, camera, lights and his van.
